How To Get Started With Exchange Online Email

This article explains the steps required to start using your Microsoft 365 email service or Exchange Online email. It covers domain verification and email service activation, mailbox creation, testing your email in Outlook on the web, and the server settings you may need to configure your mailbox in an email application if automatic setup is unavailable.

Verify your domain and activate your email service

Before your Exchange Online mailboxes can be used, Microsoft requires your domain to be verified through DNS. After verification is complete, your domain must also be configured with the required MX record, so that email is routed to your Exchange Online mailboxes.

If your domain uses our DNS service, we will add the required DNS records, complete the domain verification, and configure the MX record on your behalf.

If your domain uses external name servers or a third-party DNS provider, we will contact you with the required DNS records and ask you to add them to your DNS zone.

Once the records have been added and propagated, we will complete the setup and continue the provisioning process.

For instructions on adding the required DNS record, see How To Connect a Domain to Your Microsoft 365

Create your Exchange Online mailbox and user

Your Exchange Online mailbox and user account are provisioned by our Provisioning team.

To complete the setup, we will contact you to confirm the details for each user account you want to create, such as the display name and email address. Once we receive the required information, we will provision the mailbox and notify you when it is ready for use.

At this time, creating Exchange Online users and mailboxes through the Account Manager is not available.

Test your Exchange Online email on Outlook web

Know your Exchange Online email setup settings

Outlook and most modern email applications can automatically detect the correct settings for your Online Exchange server settings after you enter your email address and password.

If your email application cannot discover the settings automatically, use the Exchange Online server connection details below to configure your mailbox manually.
